Disclaimer: We are not responsible for any damage to your iPhone, iPad or computer due to following this guide. Always back up your data with iTunes or iCloud!

1. Download Absinthe here. Unzip it and launch “absinthe”.

(1.1 Turn off any passcode or VPN settings on your iDevice before doing step 2.)

2. Connect your iDevice and click “Jailbreak”.

3. When Absinthe says it’s “Almost done”, unlock your iDevice and tap the Absinthe icon on your home screen. Your device will reboot and when it’s done, you should have a shiny new Cydia icon on your home screen! Congratulations!

Troubleshooting:

  • If after tapping the Absinthe icon you get a “Error establishing a database connection” message, go to Settings->General->Network->VPN and turn on VPN.

How to jailbreak iPhone 4S and iPad 2 on Windows with redsn0w CLI 0.4.3

Jan21

Yesterday Chronic Dev released their long-awaited jailbreaking tool Absinthe for iPhone 4S and iPad 2. The only drawback is that it only works on the Mac. A Windows tool is said to be on the way but for those of you who are impatient and want to jailbreak immediately there is another way: the redsn0w CLI (command-line tool) now works on Windows! It can be a little tricky but don’t let that discourage you because we have a simple step-by-step guide on how to do it:

Disclaimer: While redsn0w CLI has been tested extensively by Chronic Dev and should be free of major bugs, the Chronic Dev team and Springboardnews.com takes no responsibility for any damage to your computer or iDevice due to following this guide.

1. Backup your iPhone or iPad to iTunes or iCloud! In case something goes wrong, you can easily restore from the backup. After doing the backup, keep the iDevice connected to your computer.

2. Download redsn0w CLI 0.4.3 from here. Unzip it in the main folder of your hard drive, C:\.

3. In Windows, open cmd.exe by clicking on the start menu and searching for “cmd”. Right-click on cmd.exe and choose “Run as administrator”.

4. In the cmd window, type

CD C:\cinject_0.4.3

and press Enter. (You should always press enter after every command in cmd.)

5. Type

cinject.exe -i payloads/jailbreak.mobileconfig

An installation prompt should appear on your iDevice. If not, check for any errors in the cmd window. If it says “send 1: Result too large”, reboot your iDevice and do the process again. If that doesn’t fix it, try restoring.

6. On your iDevice, tap “Install” on the VPN prompt. When it asks for a password, just tap “Next” in the upper right corner of the prompt.

7. Type

cinject.exe -j payloads

and wait for it to finish. When it’s done, it should look like the screenshot on the right. If it gives you any errors, restore your iDevice and try again.

8. Type

cinject.exe -w

9. On your device, go to Settings->General->Network->VPN and turn on the VPN by flipping the switch. It should give you an error. Tap “OK” and your device should reboot.

10. You will see a lot of error in the cmd window, that’s normal. Keep your device

connected until you see “Installing filemover” in the cmd window. When you see it, disconnect your device and if everything went well, Cydia should be on your home screen! Congratulations!

Please consider donating to the jailbreak Dream Team to thank them for their awesome A5 jailbreak! You can donate by clicking this link or by going to pod2g’s blog and clicking on “contribute” in the blog post.

3 awesome new jailbreak tweaks

iUsers

iUsers is a jailbreak tweak for iPad that lets you add multiple user accounts the same way as you would on a Mac or a PC. Every user account can have their own home screen layouts, apps and – most importantly – app data. It seems like the new user will see the screenshot of the previous users app data when he launches the same app, so don’t watch any porn in Safari before switching accounts ;)

Apparently, you select a user on the lock screen and input the password. After that, the iPad goes through a short reboot cycle when switching accounts.

On TiPb, users are reporting that their iPads are slow, crashing and buggy so as common sense dictates, you should stay away from this tweak for now. (Like that little sentence was gonna scare anyone away…) What are you waiting for? Add the repo http://cydia.iblogeek.com in Cydia and download iUsers!

StartupSound

StartupSound does just what its name says – it plays a sound when you start your iDevice. While it isn’t a necessary feature, it’s still a nice addition to iOS. The tweak can play any mp3, wav or caf file at startup and as far as I know, there isn’t any limitation to the length of the song. In order for the tweak to work, your file must be placed in a folder on the device, /var/mobile/, and named startup.wav (regardless of filetype).

StartupSound is available for free in Cydia.

TwitkaFly

If you’re a Twitter addict you’re probably gonna love TwitkaFly. TwitkaFly lets you quick reply to Twitter push mentions and tweet right from the Springboard using Activator.

TwitkaFly is available for $1.99 in Cydia.

iOS 4.3.4 for the iPad, AT&T iPhone and iPod Touch and iOS 4.2.9 for the Verizon iPhone were released today by Apple. They address the PDF exploit used by Jailbreakme.com.

If you want to stay jailbroken, stay away from this update and install the PDF Patcher 2 from Cydia instead! It’s also a good time to backup your SHSH blobs with TinyUmbrella if you ever need to restore to 4.3.3/4.2.8 again.

Google launches new photo sharing app

Google has just released a new photo sharing app called Photovine. Apparently, the app was made by Slide, a company that was acquired by Google last year.

From the video, it seems like Photovine encourages people to post a photo and then have other people respond to it with photos on the same topic.

As usual with Google, it (as far as we know) has absolutely no connection to Picasa, Google+ or any other Google service and no one really knows what the purpose of Photovine is but… at least it’s a new app. It also seems like it’s iPhone-only which is even stranger. Guess we’ll have to wait and see how this goes. In the meantime, request an invite at Photovine.com and download the app from the App Store.

Spotify now available in the U.S.

The European music streaming service Spotify is now available in the U.S. Currently it’s invite-only for the free version and $4.99 a month for Spotify Unlimited and $9.99 for Spotify Premium if you want to sign up right away.

During our invite-only beta phase, we’ll be offering three great services – from absolutely free to paid subscriptions. The services we’re launching today are:

  • Spotify Free – the unsurpassed free music service. With an invite, enjoy on-demand, buffer-free access to over 15 million songs on your computer and great social features. Manage your own music files through Spotify, and sync with your cellphone or iPod. Features occasional advertising.
  • Spotify Unlimited – all the special features of our free service, but with uninterrupted, ad-free access to Spotify on your computer. All for only $4.99 a month.
  • Spotify Premium - the top-of-the-range Spotify experience. Premium gives you access to all the music, all the time. Listen online or offline, on your computer, your cellphone and a whole heap of other devices. Enjoy enhanced sound quality and access to exclusive content, competitions and special offers. Premium costs just $9.99 a month. (That’s the equivalent of a couple of fancy coffees.)
- Spotify

Spotify is already available for free in the U.S. App Store so if you’ve signed up, go get it!

In Europe, Spotify recently put some limitations on the free version, mainly that you can listen to free music for a maximum of 10 hours per month and only listen to a track a maximum of five times (not as in five times a month – as in five times ever). We have yet to see if these limitations will also be present in the U.S. version, but if they are, Spotify will have an even harder time competing against alternatives such as Pandora, Last.fm and iTunes Store.

The even more interesting question is how the launch of Spotify in the U.S. will affect iTunes Match, Google Music and Amazon Cloud Drive. I guess time will tell.

Apple introduces volume purchasing of apps

Apple has just sent out a notice to developers about the introduction of volume purchasing of apps.

Get ready today. Business customers will soon be able to buy your apps in volume. Click through the latest Paid Applications Agreement so that your apps will be offered for sale when the Volume Purchase Program is available to businesses.

-Apple

Apparently, once enrolled, businesses will be able to purchase the app from a website instead of the App Store (!).

I’m sure there are a lot of businesses that have wanted this feature for a long time and Apple finally doing it is a welcome move.

Game review: Electro Chuck

Electro Chuck is an addictive and fun game available for iPhone and iPod Touch. The premise is simple: you control a ring-shaped creature with an electrical wire through the hole in his body so that he doesn’t get electrocuted. You do this by tilting the device and by touching the screen behind Chuck to make him jump and avoid monsters.

There are 40 levels (with the promise of more to come) set in different “worlds” and an unlockable arcade mode where the goal is to survive for as long as possible. Electro Chuck also has a lot of Game Center achievements with fun twists such as collecting no stars at all on a level.

Electro Chuck has better graphics than most animated iOS games, with very crisp and clean retina graphics and beautiful colors.

The game is fun to play and the levels are neither to easy nor to hard. While it can become quite frustrating after a while, it is definitely a good game if you want something to do while waiting for the bus. In that sense, it’s similar to games like Tiny Wings and Traffic Rush – they’re best in small, quick and frequent doses.

All in all, you should definitely pick up this game. It’s fun, addictive and only costs $0.99!

Buy Electro Chuck from the App Store
